The coin featured here is a gilt proof of an 1808 Irish farthing, struck by Matthew Boulton of Birmingham. Gilt proofs such as these were often distributed to friends as well as influential people as a means of advertising the mint's capabilities in the hope of persuading them to endorse a contract for the mint to strike coins for circulation.
