George V Third Coinage Modified Effigy
In 1927, the effigy of King George was altered slightly, showing slightly more hair detail. This change was partly to eliminate "ghosting" where the design on one side shows faintly though to the other side of the coin, caused by a discrepancy in the amount of metal displaced from the two sides in striking. The designer's initials B.M. were placed further to the right, and the beaded border is slightly coarser but more pronounced.
Two types of halfcrown exist for this year, the halfcrown from the proof set of this year is of the fourth coinage type. This example is a proof, struck specifically for collectors.
