1979 Coins as Silver Wedding Gifts
We are always being asked for coins from a particular year as a special gift item.
Recently we have been asked for silver coins for 1979, obviously as silver wedding anniversary or 25th birthday gifts. A quarter of a century is an important milestone.
Most countries stopped using silver coins around the time of the first world war.
Britain, for example, reduced the silver content of its silver coins from 92.5% (sterling silver), after 1919, and further reduced this again after 1946 to zero, so that no British coins dated after 1946 were issued for circulation containing any silver. All silver coloured coins for circulation are now made from cupro-nickel, which as its name infers is an alloy of copper and nickel.
Commemoratives & Collectors' Issues
Fortunately since about the mid 1960's, some countries have taken to issuing special commemorative coins for sale to collectors, and these have included some issues of silver coins.
British Silver 1979 Coins
There were no British silver crown coins issued in 1979. The only silver coins Britain issues regularly are Maundy coins.
If you are looking for an unusual gift to mark a 25th birthday, or a silver wedding, you have picked a difficult year for a suitable silver coin. As leading UK coin dealers, we get asked frequently for 25 year old silver coins. As we hate to disappoint our customers, we tried to unearth a small selection of other silver coins including world silver coins. So far, we have found the following.
Isle of Man 1979 Silver Crowns
The Isle of Man issued a silver crown in 1979, although we have not yet had time to add these to our Manx Coin Listings.
Manx 1979 Sterling Silver Mint Coin Set
In 1979, the Isle of Man issued complete sets of its six circulating coins, ranging from the Fifty Pence to the Halfpenny. Three different versions were made, the first version in ordinary base metal, another in platinum with an issue limit of 600 sets, and our current offering in sterling silver, with an issue limit of 10,000 sets. Since about 1947, very few coins have been produced in silver for circulation, however silver is used on occasion for special collectors editions of coins or sets.
All six reverse designs are shown superimposed on an outline map of the island,
