Description
The island nations of Kiribati and Samoa were respectively the first and last countries to welcome in the new millennium since, although close neighbours in the Pacific Ocean, they are separated by the International Date Line. To reflect this unique position the two have united in one intriguing coin celebrating the new millennium.
The obverse features the Coat of Arms of both countries side by side on a map of the islands. On the reverse, Prometheus, the Titan who in his championship of man stole the power of fire from the gods, observes the planets of the solar system while they revolve in perfect alignment around the sun. It symbolises man's use of fire, or technology, in his quest to explore the Universe while the inscription expands to "TEMPORA MUTANTUR ET NOS IN ILLIS" (the times change and us with them). On both sides the International Date Line is indicated as it angles between the two nations.
