First Footers Will Be Disappointed
Each year we get numerous enquiries in December from people wanting samples of next year's new coins ready for "first-footing". Each year we have to tell them that it's impossible to get them. The Royal Mint does not issue coins with future dates, so no 2000 dated coins will be available during 1999. As soon as banks are re-open after new year celebrations some year 2000 coins may start to become available. For ordinary coins intended for circulation, not all denominations are issued each year, and release dates depend on demand. Even if the mint produce some new dated coins during the old year, it never issues them before time.

Special Editions For Collectors
Because the Royal Mint now has a special department which produces and markets special collectors editions, there is often an approximate schedule for release of various denominations and editions. Dates for these may vary from January through to July or even later in the calendar.
We will have further information later in 1999.
Proof sovereigns and half sovereigns dated 2000 will be available from April 1st. Pricing is not expected to be announced before November 1999.

Millennium Coins
This year there is some good news for first-footers. The special millennium crown is dual dated 1999 - 2000, and is available now. The specimen in a folder would make an ideal new year / new millennium gift.

Before somebody asks, and the more information we include on our website, the more questions we get asked, there is a traditional in Britain of "first footing". The first visitor to a household in the new year is believed to affect the fortune of the owners throughout the year. Immediately before midnight, in the last few moments of the old year, a tall dark handsome "stranger" is despatched via the back door, to re-appear in the first few moments of the new year. The "first-footer" generally bears gifts such as coal, money, food or drink.
In Scotland, the new year celebration, called Hogmanay, is taken very seriously. The selection of a suitable first-footer in Scotland is believed to be the person who has consumed the least whisky, and can therefore be best expected to successfully complete the journey from back door to front door most reliably and safely.
To all our Scottish friends, we're only joking!
