When the calendar turned from 1999 to 2000 Jersey acknowledged this historic milestone with a special millennium coin featuring a banner and, positioned on a world globe, a silhouette of the island. The largest and most southerly of the Channel Islands, Jersey's long and rich history has for centuries been bound to the sea. Only fourteen miles from the coast of France, its spectacular coastline is dotted with the remains of feudal fortifications, medieval castles, and majestic lighthouses recalling tales of shipwrecks and pirates, a permanent reminder of a bygone age when the threat from invasion was real. Today's invasion, however, comes in the form of tourists, seeking the beauty of its beaches and natural countryside. Reflecting Jersey's cultural heritage and its current status as an offshore international finance centre, the innovative reverse design symbolises the islanders' aspirations in the third millennium.
