New coins celebrate Britain
Published Date: 22 June 2009
A set of coins celebrating Britain - from Stonehenge through to the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics - have been launched.
Stonehenge, Big Ben and the Angel of the North appear on the first coins to be released in the Royal Mint's 18-strong Celebration of Britain Silver Series.
The £5 Stonehenge coin has gone on sale at £27.45, with the following 17 coins being released every 28 days. All feature the London 2012 logo.
Dave Knight, the Royal Mint's commemorative coin director, said: "People are very proud of Britain, its heritage and its history. The Celebration of Britain Silver Series is a collection of coins that embraces this pride and celebrates our nation's achievements in a way that has never been done before on the UK's coinage."
The Queen, Buckingham Palace and Big Ben are all symbols of British identity, according to 80% of Britons who also said that British history is an important part of the national identity.
Of the 1,460 people interviewed for the Royal Mint, 40% also felt that the 2012 Games would help increase public pride in Britain.
