Qatar & Dubai Qatar began protective treaty negotiations with Britain in 1916, and became independent in 1971. Dubai also became independent slightly later in 1971, and is part of the United Arab Emirates (formerly Trucial States). Although the two states were merged into a monetary union, they were governed separately. Our coin is one of 5 denominations issued in 1366 AH (1966) under the British Protectorate, and is dual dated with both dates (not 1977) in the Arabic numbers. Since 1972, Qatar has issued its own coinage, and Dubai now uses the coinage and currency of the United Arab Emirates.
