The Gambia became a British colony in 1588 when it was purchased by Britain, but became independent, and part of Sierra Leone, before reverting to a British colony again in 1888. It became independent again in 1965, and a republic in 1970. Our featured coin honours The Queen Mother, and the year 1936 as the year of the three kings.
Germany acquired control of German East Africa, roughly equivalent to Tanganyika, in 1884 by treaty with local tribal chiefs, made it a protectorate in 1891, and renamed it the Colony of East Africa in 1897. After the first world war, Tanganyika was entrusted to Great Britain as a League of Nations mandate, and after the second world war, as a United Nations trust territory, becoming an independent nation with the British Commonwealth of Nations on 9th December 1961.
Germany first emerged in 827 AD at the Treaty of Verdun, although it was not finally united until 1871. It was the first Eurozone member to issue a commemorative Euro coin, which we illustrate here.
The silver proof 50 Cedis coin we show was issued to commemorate the FAO World Fisheries conference.
Gibraltar has been under Moorish, Spanish, Joint Dutch and British, and British Rule at various times. Since 1704 it has been under British rule, which has been disputed continually by adjoining Spain. In 1967 the inhabitants voted by 12,138 votes to 44 votes to remain under British rule. It has issued its own coins since 1802. Shown is a copper half quart coin of 1842.
Greece was the birth of coinage almost 3,000 years ago. It is very appropriate that the new Greek 1 and 2 Euro coins feature reminders of ancient Greek coins.
Grenada's earliest coinage consisted of counterstamped coins of other countries, usually Spanish and Spanish colonial pieces. We show here a counterstamped Brazilian gold 4000 reis with the conjoined portraits of Maria I and Petrus III of Portugal.
Guernsey has issued its own coins since 1830. Most Guernsey coins have the same obverse design as the 1933 One Double shown here, three leopards on a shield. In French, Guernsey is spelt Guernesey.
Silver proof 500 francs, from the 1969 Republic of Guinea proof set. the figures shown on the reverse are performing the Dance of the Birds, presumably to the music of The Birdy Song!
Sighted by Columbus in 1498, this part of the north east coast of South America was first settled by the Dutch in the late 16th century, but claimed for Britain by sir Walter Raleigh. It alternated between British and Dutch control, occasionally French until 1796 in fact, and 1814 by treaty. Originally part of Demerary & Essequibo, later British Guiana, it became independent in 1966. Our featured coin is a year 2000 dated two thousand dollar millennium commemorative. |

Your Opinion
We are aware that this page contains a large number of images, each approximately 240 x 240 pixels. This means that it will take a long time to load, unless you have a cable or other high-speed connection. We would be interested to hear whether you think this page would be more useful if we reduced the images sizes, perhaps to 120 x 120, to enable faster loading.
Your feedback is welcome and will be appreciated!
